That statement by economist Trần Sĩ Chương has become a popular way to describe Gen Z — a generation raised with better education, technology, and opportunities than ever before. But despite growing up in more comfortable conditions, many young people today feel increasingly overwhelmed.
Unlike older generations that struggled mainly with financial hardship, Gen Z faces pressure in a different form: the pressure to constantly succeed, improve, and keep up.
According to Tuổi Trẻ Online, Gen Z is often viewed as “the generation with no excuse to fail” because they have access to tools and opportunities previous generations never had. Yet that expectation has also created a constant need to prove themselves.

Many young people admitted feeling exhausted after continuously comparing themselves to others online.
“Overcoming Comfort” Does Not Mean Weakness
The phrase “overcoming comfort” is sometimes misunderstood as criticism toward Gen Z. But the issue is less about weakness and more about the environment they grew up in.
Gen Z may not have experienced war or severe poverty, but they are growing up in a world defined by nonstop competition, rapid technological change, and constant pressure to stay productive.
Research describes Gen Z as the first true generation of “digital natives” — people who have never lived without the internet. While technology allows them to learn faster and adapt quickly, it also makes it difficult to disconnect from work, comparison, and self-improvement.
As economist Trần Sĩ Chương noted, setbacks and failure are still necessary experiences for personal growth. The challenge for Gen Z is learning how to build resilience in a world that constantly demands perfection.
A Different Kind Of Struggle
Gen Z may not struggle in the same way previous generations did, but that does not mean their pressure is less real.
They are entering adulthood during a time of economic uncertainty, fast-changing careers, and rising mental health concerns. At the same time, they are also the generation most open about emotional well-being, personal boundaries, and the need for balance.
Ultimately, “overcoming comfort” is not about rejecting privilege.
It is about learning how to survive in a world where success never seems to slow down.
